Why You Should Find an Editor BEFORE You Start Writing

If you’re an independent spirit like me, you might feel like:

  • You should “already know how to write a book.”
  • Asking for help before you’ve completed a first draft means you’re “not a real writer.”
  • You might think that “real authors don’t need help.”

I totally understand. But with all due respect, you’re totally wrong.

In fact, there’s no reason you should know how to write a book. It’s not a skill any of us was born with. We all had to learn.

Yes, even the “real authors”!

So how does an aspiring author get the help she needs?

Why, by talking with an editor even before the book is written!

We editorial folks have spent our entire careers learning how the book business works. We know the difference between a book idea that will soar…and one that will flop. We understand the wide variety of book structures you can choose from—and which is most likely to result in sales for you

In other words, there are many reasons to find an editor and consult with them even before you start writing. (Cue the sigh of relief—you don’t have to do this alone!)

  • Why most people confuse proofreading with editing
  • Why working with an editor is like an insurance policy for book sales
  • And more!

If you think all an editor is good for is correcting your grammar and pointing out typos, think again. We’re here to help even before you pick up a pen! I explain it all in this video
