A New Nonfiction: Let’s Get Practical

Some people love to read fiction—they want to be swept away into a different world where they get to experience an entirely different sort of existence.

Some people love to read memoir. They are riveted by the real-life story of another human being—the ups and downs, the deaths and rebirths of someone living a very different life.

Me? I prefer something more practical.

The category I read—and edit—most frequently is something I like to call practical nonfiction.

I don’t think I made up the term “practical nonfiction,” but I use it more than anyone I know.

Perhaps that’s because about 85% of the books we work on here at KN Literary arts fall into this category.

When I say “practical nonfiction,” I’m talking about self-help/personal growth, spirituality, “teaching memoir” (a self-help book cleverly packaged as the author’s life story), how-to, health/wellness, and any other book that is meant to help a reader grow, change, learn something or do something.

I personally love reading books like this because I can feel the immediate value they add to my life. When I pick up a really good one, my world changes because of it.

A few practical nonfiction books that have changed me lately are The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power by Vernon Howard, Jump…And Your Life Will Appear by Nancy Levin, and The Power of Divine Eros by A.H. Almaas.

I like to think about how many different lives will be touched by the books we help create here at KN Literary.

So—are you writing a practical nonfiction book? What are some of your favorites? Let us know in the comments section below! We’d love to hear what you’re up to.

Love + Practicality,

Kelly
